INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- One of the highlights of any dedicated high-school senior's year is receiving their blue-and-gold National Honor Society tassel. It's an important honor that signifies service, academic achievement and community spirit.

The same could be said of that diligent senior's school, too. Hoosier Academies, the state's largest online charter school, celebrated its recent National Honor Society accreditation with its first-ever induction ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 17. A total of seventy-nine students in grades 6-12 joined the ranks of the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society. The ceremony was held at the Hoosier Academies Administration building in Indianapolis, with students attending both in-person and virtually.

"Our National Honor Society inductees represent the best qualities of Hoosier Academies students: dedication, excellence and intellectual curiosity," says Dr. Byron Ernest, Head of Schools for Hoosier Academies. "Their efforts in their schools and communities are inspiring."

"We're excited that so many students have shown their community spirit by joining National Honor Society, and it reflects well on our student body as a whole," Ernest says. "We hope these trailblazing students inspire their younger peers to join in the coming years."

The National Honor Society inducts high-school students who demonstrate success in four areas: scholarship, service, character and leadership. More than one million students participate in National Honor Society chapters around the world. National Junior Honor Society has similar requirements and inducts students in grades 6-8.

Hoosier Academies served more than 3,700 students in grades K-12 at the start of the current academic year. Last year, more than 75 students graduated from the online and blended learning programs -- the largest graduating class in the school's history. Hoosier Academies, which opened during the 2008-2009 school year, now employs more than 100 teachers, advisors, counselors and other staff members.
