Students at Idaho Virtual Academy (IDVA), an online public charter school, will begin their 2017-18 school year on Sept. 5, simply by turning on their computers. IDVA, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2017-18, is available to students statewide in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Families choose to enroll in IDVA for a wide variety of reasons. Some are advanced learners, motivated to increase their knowledge beyond the basic course offerings, while others come to online school seeking a more personalized one-on-one learning environment for students seeking extra assistance. IDVA also provides a safe haven for students who may have had a negative experience at their previous schools. Regardless the reason, the innovative curriculum and technology combined with a strong partnership between families and teachers make it possible to focus on each student’s academic needs.

“While students at IDVA have different life circumstances that brought them to our school, one thing they have in common is they want an education delivered in a personalized, unique way,” said Carolyn Fabis, a high school social studies teacher at Idaho Virtual Academy. “Our students value being able to work at their own pace and learning how to be responsible for themselves.”

The school’s rigorous and engaging curriculum includes courses in English/language arts, math, science, history, world languages and art, as well as other electives. IDVA offers a robust K-8 Advanced Learner Program and Advanced Placement® courses for high school students, who can also earn dual credit through local colleges and universities. In addition, IDVA offers an accredited alternative high school program, Vision High School, for students who meet state qualifications.

At IDVA, state-credentialed teachers provide instruction, guidance and support, interacting with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone and face-to-face meetings. Teachers work closely with each student to develop an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), allowing for greater support for students struggling with a topic or skill or for students to move on when they have mastered a subject.

In coordination with the local school districts, IDVA students may participate in extracurricular athletics and activities. IDVA also has a strong community with regular opportunities for students to connect through clubs, social gatherings, field trips and service-learning projects.

IDVA is still accepting enrollments for the fall. For more information, please visit http://idva.k12.com.
