Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy (LAVCA) will celebrate the Class of 2018 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Monday, May 21 at the Independence Park Theatre in Baton Rouge. An accredited, full-time, online public charter school serving students in grades K-12, LAVCA is available tuition-free to students across the state.

Among the Class of 2018’s 58 students, one quarter will graduate with honors. Five graduates indicate they are the first in their families to receive a high school diploma. Graduates report having been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including: Northwestern University, University of New Orleans, Louisiana State University, McNeese State University, Utah State University, and Baton Rouge Community College.

“As LAVCA seniors get ready to take on the next chapter in their lives, the Class of 2018 is set up for success,” said Kevin P. Chavous, K12 President of Academics, Policy and Schools. “It is gratifying to offer K12-powered students a personalized learning model that meets the diverse needs of all students.”

Reagan Berry will serve as valedictorian, and received the John McNeese Scholars Award from McNeese State University, where he will enroll this fall. Reagan is the Senior Class President, an Eagle Scout and a member of the National Honors Society. Madeleine Brown will serve as salutatorian and plans to attend the University of New Orleans after receiving the university’s President Award scholarship. Both students, as well as Mr. Chavous, will speak at the ceremony. Mr. Chavous, LAVCA Head of School Danielle Scott and graduating seniors are available for media interviews.

LAVCA students access a robust online curriculum in core subjects, as well as a host of electives. They attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers.
