KB Home (NYSE: KBH) today celebrates the release of its tenth annual Sustainability Report, available exclusively at www.kbhome.com/sustainability. KB Home was the first major homebuilder to publish a comprehensive sustainability report in 2008.

“We are proud to lead the homebuilding industry in publishing an annual sustainability report, now for the tenth consecutive year,” said Jeffrey Mezger, KB Home chairman, president, and chief executive officer. “Over this period, we have made meaningful progress on enhancing the energy and water efficiency of our homes, which can significantly reduce the long-term cost of homeownership. Our diligent focus on incorporating sustainable features into all of our homes, often at little or no additional charge, has enabled us to offer a premium product to our customers at an affordable price, and has evolved to become both a core business strategy for us and a key differentiator for our brand in the marketplace.”

The report covers KB Home’s sustainability achievements during 2016, and highlights certain cumulative results over the past decade. As detailed in the report, through 2016, KB Home has built:

  • More than 100,000 ENERGY STAR® homes
  • 11,000 Water Smart® and WaterSense® labeled new homes
  • 5,100+ solar-powered homes
  • 12 ZeroHouse 2.0 and Double ZeroHouse 3.0 project homes
  • Over 150 LEED Platinum homes

These KB homes are estimated to have collectively:

  • Prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 335,000 passenger vehicles
  • Conserved 1.2 billion gallons of water annually compared to the water consumption of typical resale homes and landscaping
  • Saved homeowners more than a total of $577 million in utility bills compared to utility costs for typical resale homes
  • The solar power systems installed at KB Home communities in aggregate produce nearly as much energy as an 11.4-megawatt solar power plant and offset the production of an estimated 11,700 tons of carbon dioxide per year. At the same time these homes have saved homeowners an aggregate of more than $3.6 million in savings every year.

In 2016, KB Home’s achievements included a cross-industry collaboration to imagine and build The Greenbuild KB Home ProjeKt, a sustainable concept home designed to anticipate the way we might live in 2050, which debuted at the 2016 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. In addition, KB Home was selected by Apple® as one of only four builders worldwide to roll out an Apple HomeKit smart-home package. The builder’s achievements against a range of goals during 2016 also included improving the average Home Energy Ratings System (HERS®) Index Score of its new homes for the ninth straight year.

KB Home takes a broad approach to sustainability, focusing on energy efficiency, as well as water conservation, healthier indoor environments, smart home capabilities and waste reduction. KB Home is the only national builder to have won awards under all of the Environmental Protection Agency programs aimed at homebuilders — ENERGY STAR®, WaterSense®, which establishes water efficiency standards, and Indoor airPLUS®, which focuses on indoor air quality. Recently, KB Home announced that it was the recipient of two prestigious awards: 2017 RESNET® President’s Award and 2017 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award.

Details of KB Home’s sustainability goals, achievements and challenges can be found in the 2016 KB Home Sustainability Report, which can now be accessed on the company’s website at www.kbhome.com/sustainability. These goals include achieving zero landfill waste by the year 2025. In developing the report, KB Home again followed the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines, which provide a widely recognized level of accountability and transparency, and are considered by many environmental experts to be the current standard for sustainability reporting.
