Champions Kenya Commercial Bank asserted their supremacy with a tight defence to demolish Homeboyz 26-6 in a thrilling Kenya Cup duel at Ruaraka Sports Club on Saturday.

Davis Chenge and Stafford Abeka scored a try each while Darwin Mukidza converted both besides slotting over four penalties to see KCB retain their top position in the league with 24 points.

Mohammed Omollo managed two penalties for Homeboyz, who beat KCB 32-16 at the same venue last season though the bankers went on to clinch the title.

"You expect quality when you meet a good side like Homeboyz," said KCB coach Curtis Olago, who noted that the festive break somewhat affected the league momentum. "The intensity was there but it didn't go the way I would have loved even though my defence carried the day."

Homeboyz coach Paul Murunga said that his charges will need to polish up and focus when it gets to tougher games.

"We committed a lot of mistakes especially at the breakdowns where we conceded 12 points," said Murunga.

Kabras Sugar beat Kenya Harlequin 22-13 at Kakamega show grounds to retain their second spot in the league even though they tie with KCB on points.

Mwamba chalked their first win of the season, crushing visiting Kisii 74-3 while Impala Saracens mauled visiting Kisii 77-0 at the Impala Sports Club grounds.

Nakuru edged out Blak Blak 26-6 at the Nakuru Athletic Club while Nondies beat Strathmore Leos 25-20 at Jamhuri Park show grounds.

Omollo's penalty gave the deejays a 3-0 lead in the match that both teams started sluggishly at Ruaraka. However, KCB responded in similar fashion through Mukidza.

Omollo slotted home his second penalty to see Homeboyz lead 6-3 and perhaps for their last points of the match as the bankers dominated from there onwards.

Chenge went for the first try of the tense duel before Mukidza converted. Mukidza went on to drill home three more penalties to see the bankers lead 19-6 at the break.

On resumption, Homeboyz went on attack but poor finishing and handling mistakes in KCB's 22m area cost them.

Homeboyz claimed possession from KCB' s attack to clear the ball but Mukidza swung the ball to the right to Abeka, who dummied through with ease for their second try.

Mukidza converted for the victory.
