Kellogg Company announced today a new commitment to support the livelihoods of 15,000 smallholder growers around the world at the UN Climate Summit held in New York today. The commitment will enable improved productivity of smallholder farmers in Kellogg's agricultural supply chain, with a focus on rice, and support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
"Climate change threatens agriculture and food systems in many regions, making it more difficult to achieve food security," said John Bryant , Chairman and CEO, Kellogg Company. "As a food company, it's our responsibility to help ensure the long-term sustainability of key grains, including rice, and enable those who help grow and supply it."
Rice is a staple food for more than half the world's population, and grown by a number of smallholder farmers in several parts of the world. Rice not only contributes to climate change because of the emissions created in current growing practices, but crops also are impacted by rising temperatures and sea levels.
This initiative is a part of Kellogg Company's recently announced global sustainability goals for responsible sourcing and conserving natural resources. In conjunction with the UN Climate Summit, Kellogg is also pledging in support of the Joint Statement for Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition and the Declaration of Forests.
"Kellogg is proud to contribute to substantial and scalable solutions that address the impact of climate change on food security and global nutrition," said Diane Holdorf , Chief Sustainability Officer, Kellogg Company. "Our pledge to support smallholder growers in our value chain is one element of a bigger plan to support climate smart agricultural practices in the food systems from which we source."
