In 1944, Lars Erik Lundberg founded what we today know as Lundbergs. A construction firm developed into the real estate company that is now a wholly owned subsidiary of L E Lundbergföretagen AB, a listed company.

On March 6, 1991, in connection with the Annual General Meeting, Lars Erik Lundberg stepped down from his post as chairperson of the Board of L E Lundbergföretagen AB. In his honor, the company founded the Lars Erik Lundberg Scholarship Foundation - a foundation with the objective of promoting research in the subject fields that Mr Lundberg had very much at heart.

In the summer of 1996, Mr Lundberg took the initiative in forming a scientific foundation, the Lars Erik Lundberg Foundation for Research and Education, with the objective of supporting research and education in public finance, business administration, and technology, and of contributing to the interaction between the business sector and academia.

Combined, both foundations today have assets valued at approximately SEK 300 m. Since the foundations were established, grants totalling SEK 124 m have been awarded, which has enabled approximately 150 postgraduate projects and two professorships, one in construction logistics and one in digital imaging and media technology.

The Board of Directors of the respective foundations include members of the scientific councils that follow the projects on a continual basis and maintain contact with colleges and universities.

Lars Erik Lundberg was the chairperson of the foundations until he passed away in 2001, when his son Fredrik Lundberg took over the position. Now the role is being taken over by the third generation of the Lundberg family. On January 1, 2018 Katarina Martinson, the daughter of Fredrik Lundberg, will take up the duties of chairperson in both foundations.

'I am pleased with and proud of being entrusted to lead the work of the Lundberg Foundations,' Katarina Martinson says. 'It is impressive to see the value growth and the results the Foundations have achieved under my father's and grandfather's leadership. Development through research and higher education is just as important today as it was when my grandfather initiated the Foundations, so it is with a great sense of commitment and interest that I take on this task.'
