The Federal Motor Carriers' Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) program carries severe penalties for cargo securement. Load securement violations can be simple to identify and a driver's ability to recognize them is crucial to road safety.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) 30 annual International Roadcheck will take place June 6-8, 2017, which will focus on cargo securement. During this year's blitz, inspectors will be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most thorough roadside inspection. Specific details are important when it comes to load securement, like knowing the dunnage must be tied down with a strap or chain and that a bungee cord cannot be used.

Good load securement is critical, not only because law enforcement will be keeping a close watch, but because the public is vulnerable if a load is improperly secured. Improper securement is not safe and can cause road hazards as well as damage to freight. Operators must fully understand the cargo securement criteria listed in the federal motor safety regulations.
