Intersections are among the most dangerous places to drive, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA). Statistics from the FHA show that 40-percent of all vehicle accidents and 20-percent of fatal accidents occur in an intersection. The most common types of intersection accidents are rear-end crashes and side swipes.
FHA research indicates that highway-rail grade crossings are also considered intersections and on average account for 10 incidents each week involving tractor-trailers.
Here are some tips from the FHA that could help reduce your chances of being involved in an incident at an intersection:
Watch for caution signs; be aware of turn restrictions, pedestrian crossings and ongoing construction.
Be aware of other vehicles changing lanes abruptly.
Maintain a safe distance between the vehicle behind and in front of you.
Be alert to brake lights and turn signals and try to anticipate why others are slowing down.
Avoid distractions and always use a hands-free device when driving.
Use extra caution when approaching an intersection where vehicles are stopped.
