Lassila & Tikanoja plc has acquired the business operations of J A Tauriainen Oy, the company specialising in the recycling and material recycling of pallets. The acquisition will make L&T one of the largest operators in the field in Finland.

J A Tauriainen is located in Järvenpää, and it is one of the leaders in the recycling and repair of pallets in Finland. The company was founded in 1992, its net sales are around EUR 7 million and it has over 20 employees.

"We are expanding our business operations to a whole new area that has, however, immense synergy potential. The new operations will complement the comprehensive services we offer for our commercial, industrial and logistics customers. Tauriainen has long since impressed us with its customer-centred business where excellent service and expertise meet the latest technology," Petri Salermo, Vice President, L&T says.

The 24 employees of Tauriainen will move to work at L&T after the acquisition.

"L&T is an established company with good financial standing and the ability and desire to support the business operations and workplace well-being I have built. I believe we can grow and develop even quicker by becoming a part of L&T, while staying true to our good, customer-centred service attitude," Jarmo Tauriainen says.

Circular economy in practice

L&T wants to provide its customers with comprehensive environmental management solutions to support the priorities of waste management and the maximum recovery of materials.

"We have already gained success in the recycling business and managed to find ways to recover materials typically regarded as waste as raw materials for new products, in cooperation with our customers. This is a step forward on that path, allowing us and our customers to re-use pallets. This is a prime example of how a circular economy works in practice," Petri Salermo notes happily.

The goal of a circular economy is to minimise the amount of waste produced and take recycling, reuse and remanufacturing into account already at the design stage of products. The change is not driven by environmental regulation, but by the scarcity and increased price of virgin materials.

"At L&T, we believe that increasing recycling and moving towards a circular economy are prerequisites for Finland's future success in a world that will struggle with resource deficiency. Recycling can create jobs, innovations and business that will secure not only the foundation of our well-being society, but also the availability of natural resources for future generations."
