Following a lively debate and contributions from the floor the tenth annual LawDeb Pension Trustees debate that took place on 28 April voted in support of the motion - by a margin of 54% to 46%.

The results of a secret ballot taken before the debate started were revealed alongside the final outcome and indicated that the debate had swayed the views of the invited audience. At the outset 62% had supported the motion, so whilst the House continued to support the motion more people questioned a continuation of current polices having listened to what the opponents of the motion had to say.

The invited audience that included many luminaries from the pensions world was welcomed by LawDeb Pension Trustee chairman Mark Ashworth. He went on to introduce Margaret Snowdon as chair of the debate, who in turn introduced the speakers. Mark Atkinson and Lesley Alexander supported the motion - which was opposed by Robert Gardner and Carolyn Saunders.

Some common ground existed between the speakers for and against the motion - with both sides recognising the many positive changes made by the current government. Those in favour of the motion argued for a period of stability so that the many government initiatives could be given time to bed-in - with those opposing arguing that more change was needed in order to address the underlying issues concerned with the culture of saving.

Closing the formal part of the evening Mark Ashworth thanked the chair, speakers and members of the audience for their contributions. He also thanked all those who had supported the debates over the ten years they had taken place - sharing his belief that the high quality that had been maintained served to make the debate an important fixture in the pensions calendar.
