RESTON, Va., April 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Edison Awards, celebrating 30 years of honoring the best in innovation and excellence in the development of new products and services, announced today that Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a global science and technology company, was voted a Gold Winner for innovation in the Tactical & Industrial Technology category at the April 20th event at The Capitale in New York City.

Leidos received the award for its support of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program, an entirely new class of ocean-going vessel--one intended to traverse thousands of kilometers over the open seas for months at a time, all without a single crew member aboard.

The Edison Awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) whose inventions, new product development methods and innovative achievements literally changed the world, garnered him 1,093 U.S. patents, and made him a household name around the world.

"Our judges recognized Leidos as a true innovator out of the many products in its category," said Frank Bonafilia, executive director of the Edison Awards.

"We are pleased to work with DARPA on this program and thrilled to be recognized for our innovative maritime autonomy technologies," said Mike Chagnon, Leidos Advanced Solutions Group president. "This award highlights Leidos' ability to rapidly mature research and development systems to meet our customer's urgent operational needs."

The ballot of nominees for the Edison Awards(TM) was judged by a panel of more than 3,000 leading business executives including past award winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medical.
