RESTON, Va., April 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a global science and technology company, today announced the launch of a pro bono legal initiative to serve U.S. veterans, community non-profit organizations, and citizens in need.

As a major contractor serving the U.S. Department of Defense, Leidos has a long-standing commitment to supporting military veterans and their families. The company currently employs more than 6,000 veterans, comprising nearly 20 percent of its workforce. Leidos also has an active Military Alliance Group (MAG), with a mission of serving as an advocate and resource for former military service personnel employees and active duty personnel and their families. The pro bono initiative, led by the Leidos legal department and General Counsel Vince Maffeo, is a natural continuation of the company's commitment to the nation's military members.

To further the engagement, Leidos became a signatory to the Pro Bono Institute's Corporate Pro Bono Challenge initiative, which is a voluntary statement of commitment to pro bono service by legal departments, their lawyers, and staff. By signing the Challenge, Leidos solidifies its pledge to identify, benchmark, and communicate its support for pro bono services. Leidos is one of the first companies in the defense industry to join the Challenge.

A facet of the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge initiative is a purposeful effort to have at least half of the legal team participate in pro bono efforts. Leidos has also pledged $10,000 toward the effort, with $5,000 donated to the American Bar Association Veterans Claims Assistance Network, a program that assists unrepresented veterans with pending disability benefits claims, as well as provides other legal support to military lawyers and service members. Another portion of the donated funds will sponsor a legal clinic later in the year, where the Leidos legal team will provide free legal advice to non-profit clients on business-related concerns.

'Our participation in this initiative exemplifies Leidos' dedication to enriching our community by donating our time and resources,' said Maffeo, 'Empowering our employees to be active and engaged citizens is integral to our corporate philosophy and culture.'
