The Rantaväylä tunnel built in Tampere by Lemminkäinen has won the Project of the Year 2017 award from Project Management Association Finland.

With a length of 2.3 kilometres, the Rantaväylä tunnel is Finland's longest road tunnel. The implementation of the project was carried out by an alliance formed by Lemminkäinen, A-Insinöörit Design and Saanio & Riekkola Oy. The project's clients were the City of Tampere and the Finnish Transport Agency.

The Project of the Year competition puts the spotlight on the most successful and significant projects of the year. In its statement, Project Management Association Finland highlighted that the Rantaväylä tunnel was one of the first alliance contracts in Finland. In alliance contracting, the customer and the service providers design and implement the project together, as a joint organisation. The benefits and risks are shared.

Project Management Association Finland noted that the Rantaväylä tunnel alliance partners were jointly committed to the targets. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Furthermore, the project exceeded all of its targets, including those related to quality and occupational safety. The value of the innovations created through the alliance contract partnership exceeded EUR 20 million.

The development phase of the two-phase Rantaväylä tunnel project took place in 2012-2013 and the implementation began in October 2013. The tunnel was opened to traffic on 15 November 2016, six months ahead of schedule.

The Rantaväylä tunnel also received the 2016 RIL prize from the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers.

The winners of the Project of the Year competition were announced at the Project Management Days event organised by Project Management Association Finland. Project Management Association Finland promotes Finnish project management expertise and has over 4,000 members representing more than 600 organisations.
