Lendlease bags three awards at WSH Awards 2015
30 July 2015

Singapore, 30 July 2015: Lendlease has won three awards in the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) category at the annual Workplace Health and Safety (WSH) Awards ceremony last evening. Organised by the Workplace Safety and Health Council and the Singapore Ministry of Manpower, the national award recognises companies and individuals who have contributed to achieving excellence in workplace safety and health

The winning projects - Insead Leadership Development Centre, Jem office tower fit-out (MND Hub @ Jurong Gateway) and Novartis Warehouse & Laboratory Expansion projects - were recognised for their outstanding safety and health performance and management systems. Beyond systems however, Lendlease goes the extra mile to care for the wellbeing of all who work on its projects.

"It is the fundamental right of every individual to work, live and play without fear of injury and return home safely every day. Traditionally, a lot of focus of WSH in the industry has been on policies and regulations, but an important part of the puzzle is the workers. For workers to commit themselves to working safely, they need to feel valued and cared for," said Reggie Lim, Head of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), Asia, Lendlease.

Lendlease has put in place a number of initiatives for workers that are not common in the industry, for example, annual health screening for all workers on all Lendlease sites, regardless of the subcontractor they are working for. Welfare facilities like prayer rooms and recreational rooms are also available on sites to create an inclusive culture. To further enhance the environment for everyone working on site, extra efforts are taken to have all walkways sheltered.

To ensure that all are aware of the risks in different work environments, Lendlease is the first and only company in Singapore to require their subcontractors' management and all Lendlease employees to complete a comprehensive online EH&S training program. Through the program called EH&S Passport, they learn how to manage and mitigate risks associated with different activities, ensuring all have health and safety at the back of their minds. Refer to the appendix for more health and safety initiatives by Lendlease.

"Ultimately, we hope that having experienced and enjoyed the benefits of caring for everyone, our stakeholders will also adopt similar beliefs and implement the initiatives for other projects which Lendlease may not be involved in," said Reggie.

Safety Observation Box

Furthermore, the mindset of everyone on site is also critical for a safe and healthy environment. Lendlease believes that EH&S is the responsibility of every individual. Every person on site from workers to subcontractors is encouraged to speak up and share their observations and concerns through a Safety Observation Box on site. Workers can submit suggestions on how EH&S can be improved and good suggestions are rewarded and implemented. Through this, Lendlease hopes to create a caring culture and make everyone feel like they are part of a team looking out for one another on site.

Global Minimum Requirements (GMRs)

Working hand-in-hand with the caring culture is the EH&S policies and framework. Going beyond compliance with statutory requirements, Lendlease implements a group-wide Global Minimum Requirements on all its operations. The GMRs sets out the minimum EH&S standards for controlling the risks associated with all of its operations across the globe including sites, offices and shopping malls. For example, one of the GMRs requires full height (floor to ceiling) engineered edge protection to be placed around structures under construction prior to the installation of the permanent façade. This full height protection is not a common practice in Singapore.

Bringing suppliers on board the safety journey

Lendlease makes it a point to work with contractors/subcontractors with BizSAFE Star accreditation. For contractors who have yet to attain the accreditation, Lendlease will work together with them to share and develop a plan and bring them onboard the health and safety journey and attain the accreditation.
