Townsville, 13 May 2016: Local year six student, Lara Holden, has won $1000 worth of books for Hermit Park State School, after suggesting the name 'Cookie' for the tower crane installed at The Science Place construction site at James Cook University.

The 'name the crane' competition, run by James Cook University and Lendlease, received entries from five local primary schools.

The Science Place is the biggest construction project ever undertaken on the Townsville campus at James Cook University, and is being constructed by Lendlease.

Helping to build The Science Place is a tower crane - currently the biggest on a Townsville construction site - supplied by local subcontractor Sky Cranes.

Lara, Lara's teacher, Principal, mum, dad, sister and grandparents attended the naming ceremony on Thursday 12 May, where the crane's name became official. A cheque for $1000 was donated to Hermit Park State School to purchase books for the school.

On her entry form, Lara wrote: 'I gave the crane the name 'Cookie' because the word 'Cookie' represents the word 'Cook' in James Cook University.'

General Manager of Lendlease's Building business in Queensland and Northern Territory, Tony Orazio, said while there were some very good names suggested, Cookie was a stand-out.

'I'd like to thank all the students that suggested names for the crane.

'Jarryd Crane was a good suggestion, named after the successful footballer Jarryd Hayne - as was Professor Crane. However, in the end, Cookie was the suggestion that resonated most with the judging panel.

'In terms of the project, it is going well, with extremely high local participation rates.

'Of the 384 workers inducted onto the site, 371 had a local Townsville postcode which equates to 97.5% local participation.

'Of the 44 work packages currently put out to the market, 33 were awarded to local subcontractors and sixto Queensland subcontractors. Only five work packages could not be sourced locally or in Queensland, so they have been awarded to interstate subcontractors with the expectation they look to source local workers. This has clearly been the case since only 2.5 % of workers don't have a Townsville postcode.

'Lendlease has been operating in Townsville for more than 20 years, with a great track record of supporting the local community,' said Tony.

About The Science Place at James Cook University
Due for completion at the end of the year, the Science Place will combine state-of-the-art laboratories and technology-enabled active learning spaces, with the capacity to link through to regional and remote, national and international locations.

The five level, 12,000 square metres facility will be built within the University's Science and Engineering Precinct, and will accommodate projected growth in student and staff numbers in Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry over the next decade.

The Science Place will include three new food outlets, a 175 seat collaborative lecture theatre, 'end-of-ride' bicycle facilities, and will be linked to the new 'Veranda Walk' that will provide a covered walkway circumnavigating the inner campus.

The CSIRO is also contributing to the project and will run education programs in the building to promote science to secondary school students.
