Logica reducing carbon footprint as climate partner of City of Helsinki

Company committed to cutting carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2020

In cooperation with the business sector, the City of Helsinki has established a Climate Partners network to curb climate change. This network will also seek new business opportunities in sustainable development. IT service company Logica is among the first firms to join the network. By signing the climate covenant, the company agrees to future measures to reduce the negative environmental impacts of its own activities, and those of clients and suppliers.

'Although IT can help reduce environmental impacts, its own footprint has continuously grown. We minimise our footprint by means such as reducing the load caused by travel. This is achieved by opting for remote meetings and encouraging low-emission commuting among our employees. For customers, we offer sustainable-development IT and consulting services. These enable our clients to reduce their own emissions', explains Heikki Nikku, President, Logica Finland.

Logica has a wide range of tools which enable clients to verify and monitor their emissions figures in the same way as other business data. In terms of logistics, emissions can be reduced using various optimisation tools and intelligent traffic solutions.

Logica's own emission reduction measures include greater use of green electricity, lower energy consumption within premises and more-efficient use of office capacity. When purchasing, we require suppliers to comply with certain environmental criteria. In addition, we are tightening our emission limits for company cars. By providing the best possible conditions for doing so, we are encouraging employees to travel on foot or by bicycle, or to engage in remote work.

'We are committed to reducing our carbon dioxide emissions at a steady annual rate of 6 per cent. Our aim for 2020 is to reduce emissions by half from their 2008 levels', explains Nikku.

In turn, the City of Helsinki has agreed to cut its carbon dioxide emissions, while increasing its use of renewable energy sources by 20 per cent by 2020. Another goal is a 30 per cent reduction in the carbon footprint of the City's information and communication technology by 2020.

Heikki Nikku of Logica signed the climate covenant with Jussi Pajunen, Mayor of Helsinki, on Tuesday.
