LPKF has achieved another crucial victory in its legal dispute over infringement of the LDS patent (laser direct structuring) by smartphone manufacturer Motorola. The German Federal Court of Justice recently rejected the action for annulment from Motorola and the Chinese BYD Group, thus fully confirming the validity of the patent.
Now that the German Federal Court of Justice has ruled in favor of the LDS patent, LPKF feels strengthened with regard to the patent infringement proceedings against Motorola: 'We are absolutely determined to bring these proceedings to a successful conclusion', said CEO Dr. Ingo Bretthauer.

The LDS process developed by LPKF and patented in many countries is used for manufacturing antennas or sensors in cell phones and other mobile electronic devices. The laser beam inscribes circuit layouts directly onto three-dimensional carrier structures made of plastics. Without tools or masks, layouts can be transferred from the computer to the carrier. The subsequent metallization and SMD assembly result in high-quality finished products. Developers benefit from complete 3-D capability on free-form surfaces and addi-tional scope to change circuit designs on small and lightweight carriers.

LDS is therefore used by many electronics manufacturers worldwide, and has become a standard technology in the production of complex antennas, for instance.
