António Setúbal Publishes Study on Uterus Pathology

22-12-17

António Setúbal, coordinator of Hospital da Mulher (Woman Hospital) and of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, published in the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynaecology a scientific revision article on a new uterus pathology detected in women subject to C-section.

In the article, entitled 'Treatment for uterine isthmocele: a pouch-like defect at the site of a caesarean section scar', an analysis is done of the existent studies on the approach of this pathology and a revision based on cases treated at Hospital da Luz.

This is a pathology that can occur around the incision scar made in a C-section: in these cases, the uterus wall is no longer fully integrated, forming a kind of a pouch that can ultimately lead to infertility or uterine rupture.

In the conclusion, the treatment of this pathology is proposed by laparoscopic vaginal surgery or hysteroscopy, the decision being made after discussion with the patient.

The team coordinated by António Setúbal that completed this work includes João Sequeira Alves, Filipa Osório, Adalgisa Guerra - all from Hospital da Luz Lisboa -, Rodrigo Fernandes (Instituto do Cancro from S. Paulo, Brazil), Jaime Albornoz (Clínica Las Condes, Santiago, Chile) and Zacharoula Sidiroupoulou (Hospital de São Francisco Xavier, Lisbon).
