First Child Femoral Hernia Repair Without Scar

João Moreira Pinto and Carlos Mariz, surgeons of the Paediatric Surgery Service from Hospital da Luz Arrábida and Hospital da Luz Guimarães, successfully performed the first femoral hernia repair without scar in a child, through PIRS laparoscopic technique (Percutaneous Internal Ring Suture).
Given the scientific interest of this technique and being a novelty at world level, the film of the surgery, performed in Hospital da Luz Guimarães, was published on June 6 in the renowned journal Videoscopy (watch the video).

Femoral hernia, a rare condition in children, presents itself as a swelling in the groin, frequently being confused with an inguinal hernia. Laparoscopy allows a better diagnosis and repair of this type of hernia, leaving no scar. Besides the obvious aesthetical advantage, laparoscopic repair enables to detect the presence of an asymptomatic/silent hernia in the opposite side of the one operated, avoiding a second surgery. This particular patient, a 6-year-old girl, also had an epigastric hernia, which was corrected in the same operative period and equally by laparoscopy.
