Hospital da Luz Lisboa Performs First Robotic Gynaecologic Surgery

15-05-18

A team directed by general surgeon Paulo Roquete and gynaecologist Filipa Osório performed, last May 9, the first robotic surgery at Hospital da Luz Lisboa.

The 40-years-old female patient operated suffered from morbid obesity and chronic pelvic pain for adenomyosis. A gastric bypass was simultaneously made, a cholecystectomy (removal of gallbladder) by lithiasis and total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). There were no postoperative complications and the patient was discharged from hospital three days after.

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery, where robotic devices are used by surgeon control. Its technical conditions increase procedure safety and potentiate the advantages of minimally invasive surgery over conventional for patients.

The team performing this surgery integrated Marta Magro, João Alves, Catarina Mendes, Filipa Osório, Natacha Carvalho, Paulo Roquete, José Manuel Passos, Carla Sanches (all in the photo above, from left to right) and Pedro Assis.
