Hospital da Luz Orthopedists Publish Work on Specialty Journal

Eduardo Carpinteiro and André Barros, orthopedic surgeons from Hospital da Luz, published a paper in The Open Orthopedics Journal on recurrent shoulder subluxation

Eduardo Carpinteiro and André Barros, orthopaedic surgeons from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, Amadora and Oeiras, published in The Open Orthopedics Journal a review paper, where they describe their experience in the treatment of recurrent shoulder subluxation. This is the most important on-line journal in the area, editing medical research papers from all over the world.

The shoulder is the most complex articulation of the human body, for the large amplitude of movements it allows - however, a feature that makes it susceptive to recurrent subluxation, a condition that limits the performance of certain daily activities, mainly sports practise.

In their paper, entitled 'Natural History of Anterior Shoulder Instability', Eduardo Carpinteiro and André Barros, based on their experience at Hospital da Luz and on bibliographic research, analyse what happens to the shoulder after a first subluxation, which structures are affected, how the lesion evolves without treatment and what are the consequences of surgery.

The two physicians conclude that inferior anterior shoulder subluxation affects in 80% of cases teenagers, young adults and sports practitioners.
To understand this medical condition and its evolution is fundamental to decide the more adequate treatment: 'It is essential to identify clearly the risk factors of recurrent subluxation. And the surgical technique to apply must be chosen accordingly to the characteristics of the patient and his lesions', they stress.

Eduardo Carpinteiro is the coordinator of the shoulder and elbow group of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Service from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, and of the Orthopedics Unit from Hospital da Luz Clínica da Amadora. André Barros is also orthopaedist in these two units and in Hospital da Luz Clínica de Oeiras. The team has wide experience in the treatment of such shoulder lesions, being pioneer in the use of arthroscopic surgical techniques (minimally invasive), for almost 10 years.
