Luz Saúde : Hospital da Luz Setúbal Surgeon Collaborates in Book on Obesity and Brain Function

Hans Eickhoff, specialist in general and bariatric surgery from Hospital da Luz Setúbal, is one of the authors of 'Obesity and Brain Function', a book on the interconnection between obesity and brain function, which has just been edited by Springer International. Included in the series Advances in Neurobiology, the book has editorial coordination of Liliana Letra and Raquel Seiça, professors and researchers of the Medicine Faculty from Universidade de Coimbra.

The work offers a complete perspective on diet and the brain mechanisms associated, including neurologic disorder risk factors and effects of bariatric surgery (for stomach reduction or gastric bypass). The authors gather the most recent knowledge on these matters and include much of the research work also developed in the scope of IBILI, the Institute of Biomedical Imaging and life Sciences (Instituto de Imagem Biomédica e Ciência da Vida), from the Medicine Faculty, Universidade de Coimbra.

Hans Eickhoff is author and co-author of two out of ten chapters of the book. In 'Neuroendocrinology of Adipose Tissue and Gut Brain Axis', he analyses (together with Paulo Matafome, Liliana Letra and Raquel Seiça) the relationship between gut and adipose tissue hormones and the brain function that regulates food ingestion. In the chapter 'Central Modulation of Energy Homeostasis and Cognitive Performance after Bariatric Surgery', the surgeon from Hospital da Luz Setúbal explains the positive effects of bariatric surgery on brain function and appetite control.
