Auto supplier challenges design & engineering students to help define the car of the future

AURORA, ON, Nov. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - As collaboration between the automotive and consumer electronics industries continues to grow in importance, Magna International Inc. announced today that the company will participate in the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In advance of its participation in CES, Magna has challenged engineering and industrial design students throughout the United States to share their vision of the car of the future.

Magna's Student Innovation Challenge invites students to submit a Vine video showing what they think the car of 2020 through 2025 should do and complete an application on the Magna website, www.magna.com/InnovationChallenge. The videos will be evaluated by a panel of judges from Magna on criteria such as creativity, feasibility, and quality.

Twelve finalists will travel to Las Vegas as guests of Magna for the 2015 CES. Finalists will compete in a design challenge at Magna's booth as well as have a chance to network with industry leaders and experience one of the largest trade shows in the world. The judging panel will select six winners of the design challenge, each of whom will be offered the choice of a scholarship or an internship opportunity at Magna.

The challenge is open to engineering and industrial design students who are at least 21 years old and attend colleges and universities in the U.S. Vine submissions are due by November 30, 2014, and finalists will be contacted via email no later than December 15, 2014.

"The automobile is becoming far more than just a means of transportation.  As global megatrends over the next 25-plus years drive our innovation and development activities, Magna's outreach to universities, entrepreneurs and technical institutes will help us define how vehicles will become smarter, cleaner, safer and lighter," said Swamy Kotagiri, Magna's Chief Technology Officer. "Today's college students represent the future of the automotive industry and the future of great companies such as Magna, so it's important to engage students and give them opportunities to grow."

In addition to the Student Innovation Challenge, Magna will serve as the sponsor of Eureka Park, an area of CES dedicated solely to startups and the promotion of new ideas. Magna will also host demonstrations at its booth with Argus Cyber Security, a pioneer in protecting connected vehicles from malicious attacks. Argus will showcase its innovative Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), which prevents a vehicle's critical components from being hacked and generates alerts and reports for remote monitoring of a vehicle's cyber health.
