Magna Steyr celebrates 34 years of Mercedes-Benz G-Class production

with newly overhauled vehicle assembly plant

GRAZ, Austria, September 27, 2013 - Magna International Inc. announces that its Magna Steyr operating unit has launched an extensively modernized and expanded Mercedes-Benz G-Class production plant at its Graz location. After only five weeks of renovation, Magna Steyr today presented the newly overhauled 63,000-square-meter production area with expanded production capacities to customers.

The renovation work was the result of nearly 10 months of planning and preparation, and is highlighted by the addition of an assembly line as well as equipment upgrades and new assembly technologies throughout the plant to increase overall production capacity and improve the flow of assembly. For the approximately 1,500 employees who work in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class production plant, the enhancements offer ergonomically optimized workplaces and increased work safety.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been rolling off the Magna Steyr production lines in Graz for 34 years, during which time more than 230,000 of the iconic off-road vehicles have been produced. In 2012 the production contract between Mercedes-Benz and Magna Steyr was extended for another seven years - until 2019. Currently, the plant is producing more units than ever before due to model variations and the popularity of the vehicle in expanding global markets such as China and the Middle East.

Günther Apfalter, President Magna Steyr: "With this investment, we are able to respond even more flexibly to the requirements of our valued customer Mercedes-Benz and we have created the basis for supplying high-quality G-Class units for many years to come. The extension of the contract and the positive development of the G-Class are an acknowledgement of our commitment to world-class manufacturing and the excellent performance of our employees in the Graz plant."
