Magyar Telekom (Reuters: MTEL.BU and Bloomberg: MTELEKOM HB), the leading Hungarian telecommunications service provider, announces that the Magyar Telekom Group (including its foreign subsidiaries, Makedonski Telekom and Crnogorski Telekom, 'Company'), being the first large company in Hungary and among the first leading European telecommunication companies will become 100% carbon neutral in 2015.

Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing our society, a major cause of which is the release of carbon dioxide through human activities into the earth's atmosphere. Already as far back as the 1990s, Magyar Telekom recognized the importance of protecting the environment and the climate; since then, this focus has become an integral component to the Company's overall strategy and activities. Pursuing the objectives defined in the Sustainability strategy and through applying innovative solutions, the Company has managed on a continuous basis to lower the amount of energy used within its operations whilst increasing levels of overall energy efficiency.

The Company has modernized its network and data centers, increased the ratio of hybrid and electric vehicles within its fleet and applied ever more effective tools and solutions. Several infrastructures are directly powered by renewable energy sources alone (wind and/or solar power), and the preferred option across the Company's operations is to use more eco-friendly infocommunication products and services. Moreover, the Company meets its external electricity requirements in Hungary through the purchase from 100% renewable energy sources, while also providing support to green projects to neutralize emissions resulting from the use of fossil energy.

'We are extremely proud that Magyar Telekom has achieved completely carbon free status, both as a company and in the services we provide to our customers. This places us very much at the forefront of the largest global telecommunication companies in this respect, and reflects strongly both our sustainability credentials and the committed strides that we have taken. We are thankful to our customers that by using our services, they support us in protecting the environment, and thereby actively participate in helping to create a more sustainable future' - said Éva Somorjai, chief HR officer of Magyar Telekom, responsible for sustainable development.
