MAPS.ME users made 100,000 edits to crowd-sourcing map in six weeks

MAPS.ME sums up the first results of the launch of OpenStreetMap built-in app editor. During the six weeks since the start of the editing feature in MAPS.ME for Android and iOS users have made more than 100,000 additions and edits.

The MAPS.ME apps are based on OpenStreetMap crowd-sourcing map, which created and updated by editors, just like Wikipedia articles. Developing an editing function in the app made it possible to greatly increase the number of editors, and thus improve the accuracy and relevance of information. Now, the map can be updated not only by OpenStreetMap activists on the basis of satellite images, but also by users of MAPS.ME from 192 countries. The number of worldwide app installs crossed 40 million in April 2016.

'The launch of the map editor inMAPS.ME was a great stride for the whole OpenStreetMap community. Every person can make its contribution in a few clicks to the development of open maps for users worldwide, help improve and obtain a more detailed map of its own city or district. We are glad that this function has proved to be so popular, and the number of edits is growing, making the life of every user of our maps better. We will make every effort to further develop the OpenStreetMap community', commented Eugene Lisovskiy, CEO of MAPS.ME.

Following the results of the six weeks, owners of Android-devices have edited maps in one and a half times more actively than iPhone and iPad owners. About 60,000 edits were made through the MAPS.ME apps for Android, and 40,000 edits through iOS-version.

The map is most often updated with restaurants, grocery stores, cafés, stations and hotels. In addition to new points insertion, users actively edit the already existing ones: 40,000 points have been edited in six weeks and 16,000 of them were addresses. On average, users make 2,500 edits a day.

The top-5 countries for the number of editors, along with Russia, include Ukraine, Germany, the Philippines and Belarus. According to the number of edits, Russia is leading, Ukraine is next, and then comes Germany, the USA and the Philippines. The top-5 countries for the average number of edits per user (among those with more than 100 MAPS.ME editors) are the following: the UAE, the USA, Mexico, China and Iraq.
