Manitowoc Cranes named "Large Employer of the Year" for Veterans OJT Program

Manitowoc, Wis. - February 23, 2015 -Manitowoc Cranes announced that the company has received the "Large Employer of the Year" award from the American Legion for its practice of hiring veterans through its on-the-job training (OJT) program.

The OJT program, which was launched in August 2014, is the first of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. It was designed to help Veterans discover what military skills best translate to civilian industry and their area of interest. Participants of the program at Manitowoc Cranes get full exposure to a wide array of business processes - all designed to provide the opportunity for the Veteran to gain valuable work experience while showcasing his/her skills in the civilian business world.

Derek Jablonicky, Veterans Employer Representative with the Office of Veterans Services, nominated Manitowoc Cranes for the award calling the program highly successful and a testament to the joint collaboration between Manitowoc Cranes, the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, and the Office of Veteran Services.

"Manitowoc's program is one of the best around and their efforts to bring gainful employment opportunities to those that have sought to protect our nation is truly admirable," said Jablonicky.

"I'd like to thank Wade Bumgarner, Manitowoc recruiter and Navy Veteran; along with Linda Barthels, Human Resources representative, who were instrumental in designing the program itself and leading the hiring efforts," said Tom Musial, SVP of HR and Administration. "Their passion and enthusiasm for our Veteran outreach efforts is what helps us attract Veteran candidates to our organization. In addition, we are thankful for the support of the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, and the Office of Veteran Services in making this all possible."

In addition to the OJT program, Manitowoc Cranes also sponsors a number of special efforts to further recognize and show appreciation for the many veterans employed at the facility. At their annual Veterans Day celebration last November, the company's VP of Operations Dan Kaltenbaugh, personally designed and distributed a special "challenge coin" to each veteran. A challenge coin is a medallion traditionally given to service members to prove membership in a particular unit. Manitowoc's coin bears the company logo and values, along with each branch of service.

"As a Navy Veteran myself, I wanted to do something to recognize and honor the servicemen and women who have joined our ranks here at Manitowoc Cranes," said Kaltenbaugh. "It's a small way for us to connect with one another on a more personal level and to share our stories of service and sacrifice."

The "Large Employer of the Year" award will be presented at this year's America Legion State Convention to be held on July 17, 2015 at the Radisson Paper Valley in Appleton, Wisconsin. Representatives from Manitowoc Cranes, the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), and the Bay Area Workforce Development Board will be in attendance.

Manitowoc Cranes currently employs approximately 860 people at its Manitowoc, Wisconsin location, of which 103 are identified veterans representing 12 percent of the workforce.
