C40 Mobility Management Network meets in Paris for first of its kind workshop. Hosted by Mayor Hidalgo, cities work on how to reduce private car use and increase walking and cycling options.

Paris, France (28 Sept 2016) - Experts from fourteen global cities will meet in Paris City Hall today to find ways to tackle climate change by reducing private car use and encouraging urban citizens to walk, cycle and use public transport. Hosted by Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, the first C40 Mobility Management Network workshop will bring city officials together to share ideas on how to transform transportation in their cities. The Network is convened by C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) and supported by Mastercard.

The cities participating in the C40 Mobility Management Network workshop are Auckland, Boston, Buenos Aires, Bangalore, Curitiba, Kolkata, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Nairobi, Quito, Paris, Stockholm and Wuhan.

'This week in Paris we have celebrated our annual car free day, and seen the historic vote to pedestrianize the right-bank of the Seine,' said Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chair-Elect of C40. 'Paris is transforming our mobility system to prioritize public transport, bikes and pedestrians, cut air pollution and tackle climate change. I look forward to sharing these ideas with so many other cities from around the world and learning from their innovations.'

'Mobility management is the art of encouraging citizens to make better decisions about how they move around the city,' said Mark Watts, C40 Executive Director. 'This means providing citizens with more transport options and making it easier to choose the transport options that will most benefit public health, social equity and generate the lowest possible greenhouse gas emissions.'

'As a global technology company that's working with major cities around the world, Mastercard understands the economic, social and environmental challenges stemming from rapid urbanization and has seen the positive impact public-private partnerships can have,' said Hany Fam, EVP Mastercard Enterprise Partnerships. 'We're glad to bring our insights and expertise to bear to help cities address these issues in a sustainable matter.'

'A third of all Paris' greenhouse gas emissions are generated by passengers' travels, representing a significant share of Paris carbon footprint' said Celia Blauel, Deputy Mayor for the Environment and Sustainable Development. 'It is also the sector that has great potential for cutting emissions. That is why Paris is proud to host the C40 Mobility Management Network and welcome so many cities here today. By understanding what has worked in other cities, we can each deliver change at a faster rate and lower cost than we could by acting in isolation.'

The C40 Mobility Management Network was launched, in partnership with Mastercard, at the Climate Summit for Local Leaders, at Paris City Hall during COP21 in December 2015. Paris is the lead city for the Network.
