Virginia Cancer Specialists Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program Celebrates Twenty-Five Years of Saving Lives

November 20, 2014

Collaborative program with Inova Fairfax Hospital has provided life-saving treatments to more than 800 patients, close to home

Fairfax, Va. (November 20, 2014) - Virginia Cancer Specialists (VCS), a premier cancer center in Virginia that is united in healing with The US Oncology Network, is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of its Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program. Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant is the only transplant program in the Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). FACT accreditation is the recognized gold standard across the industry, the benchmark for quality care often required by insurance companies, and a distinguishing feature of top-notch stem cell transplant programs. Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant was founded in 1989 as a joint effort with Inova Fairfax Hospital. The program pioneered some of the first stem cell transplants in the mid-Atlantic region and has provided these life-saving procedures to more than 800 patients to date.

"Our Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program is another critical component in our mission to deliver the most advanced, comprehensive world-class cancer care to our patients," said Gregory Orloff, M.D., medical oncologist with VCS and co-director of the Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program. "By offering this innovative program, we are able to provide potentially life-saving treatments to patients, close to home, without them having to endure the strain of traveling long distances and incur additional costs for treatment. Local treatment allows patients to have the much needed support of family and friends, in addition to saving patients the financial burden often created when they are treated out of town for an extended period of time."

One of the few programs in the country to offer comprehensive transplantation services in a community setting, the Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program is recognized as a distinguished leader in the field due to its long history of success and the experience and expertise of its highly skilled team of transplant specialists. The program offers a full range of bone marrow and stem cell transplant options and treats a wide range of life threatening diseases, including leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), myelofibrosis, and aplastic anemia.

"The Silver Anniversary celebration for our Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program marks a quarter century of success in providing life-saving procedures to patients with cancers and blood diseases once considered incurable," said Dipti Patel-Donnelly, M.D., medical oncologist with VCS and co-director of the Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program. "Our program offers the very latest promising therapies to these patients, providing hope and healing to those who once had few treatment options."

The program makes an important contribution to the local medical community whose physicians and patients greatly benefit from having a high-quality, well-established stem cell transplant program in place. As the program offers the most advanced transplant options and technologies available today, there is no need for patients to travel elsewhere for treatment. The program also serves as a regional resource for transplant services, giving regional physicians a facility they can confidently send their patients to for these very complex procedures.

"We are very proud of the long tradition of excellence our Fairfax Stem Cell Transplant Program has achieved," noted Linda Anderson, Executive Director, Virginia Cancer Specialists. "Our outcomes rival, and in some cases surpass, those of other institutions providing similar services. Patients can take comfort in knowing these advanced procedures are available right here at home in their own community, giving them renewed hope for a longer life."
