microtechnology
Regulatory News:
The Norwegian Center of Expertise for Micro and Nano technology (NCE)
recently granted MEMSCAP A.S. (Paris:MEMS), a Skoppum-based provider of
innovative products and solutions based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical
Systems (MEMS), its award for excellence in microtechnology. The award
was received by Jan Hallenstvedt at MEMSCAP's facility in Skoppum on
August 28, 2012.
MEMSCAP serves the aerospace/defense, optical communications, medical,
biomedical, and IT/consumer sectors. The company is constantly growing
its Intellectual Property portfolio -considered one of the largest in
the world of MEMS - to support its customers' needs in components,
modules and manufacturing techniques.
The Norwegian Centres of Expertise (NCE) was established to support
innovative activity in those industries that show the most growth and
international potential. The objective of the program is to focus,
improve and accelerate the existing development processes within these
clusters. The organizations behind the NCE program are the Industrial
Development Corporation in Norway (SIVA), the Research Council of Norway
(RCN) and Innovation Norway.
Over the last years, MEMSCAP has marketed a wide range of pressure
sensors and modules for critical aerospace, defense, and space
applications. MEMSCAP MEMS-based products offer several advantages over
most competitors' sensors. Not only are size, mass and power consumption
kept to a minimum, but at the same time unwanted effects, including
signal drift and non-linearities, can be controlled due to the
combination of proprietary design, assembly and calibration processes.
These products are capable of extended lifetime operation, especially
where low drift over a wide temperature range (including thermal chocks)
and resistance to extreme conditions are required.
One of the latest achievements was performed on 6th of August
this year, when MEMSCAP pressure sensors landed on Mars with
"Curiosity", the most advanced robot of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a USA
federally funded research and development center and NASA field center
located in Pasadena, California). This will be a two year mission on
Mars to collect and analyze mineral specimens.
Under the NCE program, MEMSCAP has developed several key MEMS
technologies and taken advantage of the NCE organization to expand its
present technologies, but also to target important innovations for the
company to maintain its technological advance. According to MEMSCAP
General Manager Jan Hallenstvedt, "NCE organization has supported
MEMSCAP for a long time now. As MEMSCAP AS is constantly expanding its
know-how in microtechnologies to maintain its competitive advantage, it
is essential to have a resource like the NCE to support our strategy.
MEMSCAP is pleased and honored to receive this award granted by its own
peers."
About
the Norwegian Center of Expertise for Micro and Nano technology (NCE):
The NCE focuses on the miniaturisation of ICT systems and on different
applications of micro and nanotechnology with an emphasis on system
technology in which microsensors, microelectronics and microactuators
are integrated. This business cluster is a world leader in areas of
significant growth and development potential and represents an exciting
high-tech segment in Norwegian industry. The microtechnology companies
in this business cluster together with HiVE are a central force in the
national commitment to microtechnology and have well-established network
relations with SINTEF, UiO, NTNU and a number of centres of expertise
outside of Norway.
