WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Department of Defense and military industry customers will get a real-world look at driving conditions in the mountains of Afghanistan when Meritor® (NYSE: MTOR) showcases the capabilities of its defense products at the AUSA 2014 Annual Meeting and Exposition Oct. 13-16.

Visitors to Meritor's booth No. 7229 can ride a new simulator called "The ProTec(TM) Experience" that brings the rough driving conditions in Afghanistan to reality. Riders are surrounded by a giant 180-degree monitor during two separate three-minute drives on a simulated FMTV (family of medium tactical vehicles).

"First, riders drive away from a base across a rocky trail while bouncing and shaking just as our soldiers in Afghanistan would when riding in a vehicle equipped with a standard beam axle," said David Damian, director, Sales and Marketing for Meritor Defense. "Next, the simulator takes them over the same rough terrain in an FMTV with Meritor's ProTec independent suspension. They experience a much smoother, more stable ride."

The goal, Damian said, is to show how military vehicles equipped with ProTec high-mobility independent suspension systems offer significant advantages over standard solutions. In addition to delivering improved ride quality, Meritor's independent suspension is built with lighter-weight components and design architecture, meaning military vehicles can be fitted with additional armor to protect soldiers in the field.

In addition to the ProTec simulator, visitors to the 1,400-square-foot booth can tour a vehicle dynamics ride-tuning support trailer to learn how Meritor tests shock absorbers to optimize ride performance on military vehicles. Damian said this "laboratory on wheels" travels to military OEMs for onsite testing to evaluate prototypes at varying speeds and conditions.

"Our presence at AUSA is focused largely on advanced technology solutions that protect our warfighters and deliver the highest levels of performance, reliability and durability to military vehicles," Damian said. "Precision ride-tuning and our ProTec independent suspension system are best-in-class solutions that deliver significant benefits to America's warfighters."
