TROY, Mich. (Jan. 23, 2014) - Meritor WABCO, a leader in the integration of safety and efficiency technology for the North American commercial vehicle industry, will present its insights and perspective on collision mitigation Thursday, Jan. 23, at SAE International's 2014 Government/Industry Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Alan Korn, director, Advanced Brake System Integration, Meritor WABCO, will address Collision Mitigation Systems as part of a panel on commercial vehicle safety. Other panelists include representatives from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Korn, who is responsible for advanced vehicle dynamics engineering and government affairs at Meritor WABCO, has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive and commercial vehicle industries.

Meritor WABCO is an industry leader in collision warning and mitigation systems such as OnGuard™ Collision Mitigation and OnLane™ lane departure warning for commercial vehicles, which create a safer environment for drivers through advanced technology. Korn's presentation will include a system description as well as techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of collision mitigation systems.

A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association study indicated that more than 80 percent of safety-critical events involved some degree of driver distraction. Collision mitigation systems can help bring the driver's attention back to the road and reduce the risk of truck-striking, rear-end collisions. Thursday's session will also include NHTSA commercial vehicle safety research as well as real-world safety experiences and fleet safety data from a major trucking fleet.

The three-day SAE International Government/Industry Meeting includes technical authorities from government, industry and academia who are leading advanced automotive technology, regulations and pending legislation. It provides opportunities to address issues that will influence future decision-making for those within the industry. The forum is co-located with the Washington Auto Show at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

SAE International is a global association of more than 138,000 engineers and technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle industries. SAE International's core competencies are lifelong learning and voluntary consensus standards development.
