MCC-SFRE Heavy Industry & Equipment Co., Ltd. (MCC-SFRE) announced that, the large thin-walled cylinder forging, which was developed by MCC-SFRE for production of nodular cast iron pipe through centrifugal casting for Deyang Wanzhong Smithing Mechanical Equipment Plant, was successfully produced on October 13, 2014. The last forging process was finished in the rolling-forging workshop, after the primary thermal treatment (normalize-tempering), it was smoothly delivered for inspection. As a matter of fact, this is the first time in the history of MCC-SFRE to produce such a large-sized thin-walled cylinder forging with terrace, and thus MCC-SFRE has accumulated more technical information and experiences in forging process of such components.
The material used for this forging is 21CrMo10. The forging is designed with an external diameter of 2.86m, an internal diameter of 2.32m and a length of 3.16m, with a weight of 46.2 tons. In production of such forging, usually three-way hammer forging shall be utilized so as to ensure the uniformity and the circular degree of the wall thickness. But in the company, only the single-way longitudinal hammer can be used so that it's very hard to ensure the uniformity and the circular degree of the wall. In addition, since the cylinder is designed with terrace, it is very difficult for forging operation.
During the forging process, MCC-SFRE adopted small-angle rotary chambering and forging technologies so as to ensure the circular degree; an additional leveling process was employed to ensure the flatness of the cylinder terminal; and new forging process and operational methods were employed to ensure the internal and external diameters at the terrace are in compliance with the requirements in the drawings. After six times of forging, the huge pipe die forging was completed, with perfect appearance and all the sizes were in compliance with the requirements in the drawings.
