Solar Impulse completes record-breaking solar-powered flight supported by Meyer Burger's photovoltaic cell connection technology.

Meyer Burger Technology Ltd (SIX Swiss Exchange MBTN) congratulates clean technology pioneers Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg together with the entire Solar Impulse crew on successfully completing the first ever round-the-world solar flight in the Solar Impulse 2 airplane. After travelling 40,000 kms without fuel, the Solar Impulse, powered solely by photovoltaic technology for its entire journey, landed this morning, July 26, 2016, in Abu Dhabi.

As one of the official suppliers to the Solar Impulse project, Meyer Burger is very proud to have provided its cutting edge premium cell connection technology to connect the over 17,000 high-efficiency solar cells to the 269.5 m wing panel of the Solar Impulse 2 airplane. During the flight around the globe in challenging and often harsh environmental conditions, the solar cells in the wing panel were able to collect enough solar energy during the day to enable the Solar Impulse to fly both by day and night. During his historic, record-breaking leg of the flight from Japan to Hawaii in July 2015, André Borschberg travelled five days and nights across the Pacific proving the endurance and power of solar energy.

The pioneering Solar Impulse project clearly underscores the unlimited possibilities of a wide range of photovoltaic applications. The knowledge gained throughout the flight contributes directly to the further development of ground-breaking solar technologies not only in architectural structures but also in our daily lives.

Meyer Burger and Solar Impulse are united by the same vision: working towards a cleaner future powered by a sustainable energy supply and driven by innovative PV applications which combine leading technologies with infinite solar energy.
