Mondi Containerboard's Fruit Logistica workshop, entitled "Paper based packaging - what's in it for my business?", was a resounding success. The company launched its new quality and sustainability brand aqua protec to a broad audience, while its Corrugated Packaging segment highlighted the customer advantages of paper-based packaging from a converter's point of view. During the event, Mondi's experts also performed a live-lab show demonstrating ProVantage Kraftliner Aqua's excellent water resistance, and unveiled the findings of a recent sustainability survey.

Launch of aqua protec brand

Aqua protec allows manufacturers to brand their corrugated boxes with a quality and sustainability trademark. It indicates that the boxes are made from the water-resistant and eco-friendly ProVantage Kraftliner Aqua and/or ProVantage Fluting Aqua paper grades. In addition, aqua protec boxes are more water-resistant than boxes that contain standard kraftliner or Semi Chem paper grades in the same substance weight. The aqua protec logo can only be used if the entire corrugated boxes are made of FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) / PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified paper grades and the grades comply with the standards of FDA or BfR.

Florian Stockert, Sales & Marketing Director Containerboard at Mondi Europe & International, explains: "With aqua protec Mondi Containerboard is giving the corrugated industry, growers and retailers the opportunity to provide added value to their packaging solutions. Not only do we supply high quality containerboard paper grades to our customers, we also offer the advantages of a branded corrugated box."

Workshop highlights benefits of paper-based packaging

During the packaging workshop, Robin de Jong, Regional Manager Mondi Corrugated Packaging Germany/Austria, presented a number of box comparisons in humid environments with various board combinations. Results prove that boxes using ProVantage Kraftliner Aqua have the same or higher BCT values than standard kraftliner boxes, while allowing for material reduction. Mr de Jong explains: "The numerous benefits of paper packaging are advantageous for both our customers and the environment. Corrugated packaging can be tailored to diverse demands. Thanks to high quality printability it offers great branding opportunities.Crucially for the fresh produce sector, the right temperate and humidity levels can be guaranteed by ventilation holes, the shape of the packaging and the use of treated paper. Corrugated packaging is also recognised as a hygienic solution for fresh produce." Since 2003 the 'International Good Manufacturing Practice' (GMP) Standard has confirmed that corrugated board products satisfy all requirements of the food industry pertaining to quality, safety, and hygiene.

Sustainability survey findings

Mondi also provided insights into a recently conducted study. The research*, entitled "Corrugated Boxes and Sustainable Development Requirements", explored the needs of European growers, corrugators and retailers in terms of eco-friendly packaging. One of the main findings was that corrugated boxes are perceived as the most sustainable option for fruit and vegetable packaging as they are recyclable and manufactured from renewable materials.

Exhibition focus

Together with Mondi's Corrugated Packaging business segment, Mondi Containerboard exhibited in the newly opened City Cube Berlin. At its booth, the full-range supplier showcased a comprehensive range of 12 highly functional paper grades for ecologically-sound fruit and vegetable packaging. The focus was on ProVantage Kraftliner Aqua and ProVantage Fluting Aqua, which are water-resistant for up to three days, as well as on the white-top kraftliners ProVantage Komiwhite and ProVantage Baywhite.

Another special highlight was a lightweight corrugated tray from Mondi Corrugated Packaging made with ProVantage Kraftliner Aqua, which offers significant savings potential for fresh fruit and vegetable producers. Mondi Corrugated Packaging also presented a corrugated drum especially designed for seed potatoes. The alternative to sack storage avoids spoilage through effective ventilation and weight pressure reduction even in high load stacking situations. Furthermore the company showcased a point-of-sale carry solution for cherries and lemons and a tray for citric fruits which through a unique design better supports freshness during long transports.
