IDGC of Centre - Kostromaenergo division continues implementing measures to provide remote control of power grid facilities using a system of high-speed data channels based on fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL). At the beginning of 2016 in the service area of Kostromaenergo 1,663 kilometres of fiber-optic networks were constructed. Today, through the fiber optic channels Kostromaenergo's head office is linked with 25 of 27 Distribution Zones and about half of 35-110 kV substations (SS).

During 2016 Kostromaenergo's experts plan to install fiber at eight power centres in Kostroma, Kostromsky and Susaninsky districts of the region (SS 110 kV 'Airport' and 'Vasilyevo', SS 35 kV 'Karavaevo', 'Kuznetsovo', 'Korkino', 'Ilyinskaya', 'Sukhonogovo' and 'Kalininskaya'). In Buisky district an optic line will connect the SS 220 kV 'Borok' in the settlement of Chistye Bory and three 110 kV substations in the town of Bui. Installation and commissioning work of the equipment will begin in late July.

Work on laying the fiber-optic communication lines is carried out with the involvement of investors, communication operators, who use Kostromaenergo's infrastructure for fiber suspension. In exchange of permission to use the poles investors transfer some optical fibers in a cable to Kostroma power engineers of IDGC of Centre in an amount sufficient to meet the needs of the company for the long term.

Installation of remote control for power grid infrastructure via fiber optic lines allows Kostromaenergo's specialists to save time and costs of operational maintenance, remotely control and monitor power consumption settings and operations necessary with power equipment, monitor the status of power supply circuits and ranges of equipment work. This provides a significant increase in efficiency of prevention, response and liquidation of emergency situations, and as a result, contributes to the reliability and quality of electricity supply to consumers.
