Female Orangutan transferred from Frankfurt Zoo

Bruno (44) the experienced orangutan male received the new family member rather calmly. There were no wild chases or hitting - the best preconditions for true love between orangutans. Jahe, the 10-year-old orangutan female from Frankfurt Zoo has long red hair, a slim figure and large, dark eyes. She's there to bewitch Bruno and complete Hellabrunn's orangutan family.

Despite her reserved manner, the zoo is hoping that Jahe will produce baby Sumatran orangutans, an endangered species. Matra gave birth to the last baby orangutan (Jolie) in 2009.

Petite Jahe arrived in Munich back on 24 October 2012. During her first weeks in her new home she got to know her bedroom, her zookeepers and then slowly the other members of her new family. "This settling in period really wasn't easy," recounted zoo director, Dr. Andreas Knieriem. "Jahe is very shy and at first she played up a lot. She even turned down the orangutans' favourite food, grapes. Now she is eating well and is integrated into the family group."

Lia and Jula travel to Budapest

Both of Munich's orangutan girls, Lia (12) and Jula (11) moved to Budapest Zoo in March 2013. As part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) they will both be doing their bit for species conservation in Hungary and will be living with their female orangutans, Jambi (15) and Moira (3). The two Munich girls, who are at the optimum age for breeding, weren't able to reproduce at Hellabrunn because their father, Bruno, is the only male here. This job now falls to Budapest's male orangutan, Chuji (17), who was born in Hamburg and isn't related to the Munich girls.
