MYTILINEOS: Actions in support of youth innovation & entrepreneurship

Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Initiatives

Athens, Greece - May 17 2018 - MYTILINEOS invests in promoting innovative ideas, especially when deriving from younger generations, aiming at continuously strengthening youth innovation and entrepreneurial activity in the framework of the Sustainable Development Objectives with actions and initiatives aimed both at the cessation of youth unemployment and the creating surplus value from the new generation that will remain in the country.

More specifically:

  • For a 2nd consecutive year, MYTILINEOS supports the Pan-Hellenic space technology competition CanSat in Greece, organised by the European Space Agency. The purpose of this initiative is to firmly establish Greece as a participant in the European space technology competitions and to build a community of students that will turn to space technologies in the future recognising the opportunities that derive from this engagement.

  • For the 2nd consecutive year, MYTILINEOS also supported the "F1 in Schools" World Champions competition, which has been taking place for the last 12 years under the auspices of the Formula One organisation, constituting one of the most comprehensive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

Education programmes that stimulate students' interest in Natural Sciences, New Technologies, Engineering, Mathematics and more. MYTILINEOS provided financial support for the scientific project of the Omega Racing team from the "Ekpedeftiki Anagennissi" School, which represented Greece and ranked at the 9th place in the 2017 "F1 in Schools" World Champions finals held in Malaysia.

  • Moreover, in 2018, MYTILINEOS, realizing the potential of robotics as a branch of science and a source of inspiration for young people, as well as the need for a broader modernisation of Greek schools by supplying them with educational robotics equipment, launched its collaboration with the Organisation for Educational Robotics & Science - WRO Hellas, the principal body responsible for holding educational robotics competitions in Greece and the greater region of SE Europe. In the first stage of this collaboration, MYTILINEOS will offer 25 LEGO Education Wedo2 sets to an equal number of Primary Schools in Greece, providing them with the opportunity to participate in the annual educational robotics competitions. Students will be able to develop their talent, imagination and technological and scientific skillset, by applying newly learned scientific principles in order to build integrated robotic models.

  • In the context of Sustainable Development Goal 17, MYTILINEOS launched its collaboration with AIESEC Greece. AIESEC, the largest global voluntary students' organisation, is present in 127 countries and aims to develop leadership qualities to young people. For 2018, the Company's collaboration with the organisation involves the support of the EuroXPRO 2018 Global Conference, whose task will be to renew the organisation's strategic plan for the achievement of the Global Sustainable Goals. More specifically, MYTILINEOS will financially support the production of metal bottles to be used by Conference participants, in order to prevent using an estimated quantity of 6,000 plastic cups for the entire duration of the Conference. With this innovative initiative, AIESEC Greece aims to contribute more actively to the protection of the environment and, with the Company's support, to establish partnerships that promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

  • In the same context, MYTILINEOS is also collaborating with the European Youth Parliament Greece (EYP Greece), a non-profit organisation established by and addressed to young people, which counts 40 European countries as members and whose primary objective is to promote non-formal learning. In order to promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals to student communities, especially those in Greece's peripheral regions, MYTILINEOS supports the organisation of the 37th National Selective Conference, whose topic is: "Contemplating Europe's future: Sustainable Development as a political choice for future generations". The Conference's proceedings will initiate discussions on the environment and economic growth, which also protects natural resources. A total of 120 students aged 16 to 18 from schools in Attica, Achaia and Viotia will participate in the Conference, together with 70 young students from all over Europe.

  • Finally, the financial and advisory support that MYTILINEOS provides to the Youth Entrepreneurship Council (SEN) of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) aims to bring young people closer to entrepreneurial thinking and action, thus strengthening entrepreneurship culture where it matters most - in education. During the 2016-17 school year alone, 8,810 students participated in the 10 programmes implemented by SEN, which resulted in 95 virtual businesses developed by students, bringing the country's student community closer to creativity, innovation and teamwork.
