About Grand Banks:

Inspired by the floating "oyster barges" that lined lower Manhattan's waterfront in the 18th and 19th centuries, Grand Banks is a seasonal oyster bar aboard a historic 142-foot wooden schooner, the Sherman Zwicker. The menu at Grand Banks features sustainably produced oysters from both coasts—with a special emphasis on the native Atlantic oyster species harvested from New York waters—as well as ingredient-driven small plates and nautically inspired cocktails.

For Grand Banks' inaugural outing in 2014, the Sherman Zwicker docked at Hudson River Park's Pier 25 in Tribeca, giving visitors a stunning 360-degree view of the Hudson River, Wall Street, and New York Harbor. Extensive press coverage followed, with special attention paid to Grand Banks' meticulous oyster service, its spiffy staff, its well-built cocktails, and its role in revitalizing New York’s long history as an "oyster town" dating back to the early Colonial era.

Grand Banks' hand-built wooden ship, officially christened in 1942 as the F/V Sherman Zwicker, is the last original saltbank fishing vessel in existence. Once part of the proud Grand Banks fleet that fished the abundant but turbulent North Atlantic, the Sherman Zwicker traded cod and salt throughout the Americas. Today she is an exceptional and rare surviving example of traditional boat-building skills. The Sherman Zwicker is also the largest wooden vessel in New York City.

Conceived by lifelong sailors, Miles and Alex Pincus, in collaboration with restaurant veterans Mark Firth and Adrian Gallo; the Grand Banks is a joint venture between the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Maritime Foundation and the hospitality group Arts & Leisure. A share of onboard earnings go to support maritime conservation, education, and preservation. In 2014, Grand Banks donated over $50,000 to restore healthy rivers, to develop oysters habitats in New York Harbor, and to preserve at-risk historic seagoing vessels. As part of the Grand Banks' educational mission, the Maritime Foundation presents onboard exhibitions about maritime history and curated a lecture series on topics from nautical culture to aquatic sustainability.
