•           Essential gas mains upgrade starts on Monday 28 July

•           Work will secure local gas supplies for decades to come

•           Drivers to expect lane closures and a diversion route

Work to lay a new gas pipe that will keep gas supplies flowing to homes and businesses for decades to come is due to start on Monday (28 July) in the Arnold area of Nottingham.

National Grid is renewing 120 metres of gas pipes in the A60 Mansfield Road. The three-week project will see the existing iron gas mains, which have been in use for many years, replaced with hardwearing modern plastic pipes that are designed to last for at least 80 years.

National Grid authorising engineer Paul Patrick said: "This is essential work that will help us to continue to provide a dependable gas supply to homes and businesses in Arnold well into the future. It will be a short term inconvenience for long term benefit."

To enable this work to be completed safely the Nottingham bound lane of the A60 Mansfield Road will be closed between Sir John Robinson Way and Nottingham Road. For drivers heading away from Nottingham there will no right turn from the A60 Mansfield Road into Nottingham Road.

All shops and businesses along Mansfield Road will be open for business as usual. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

Some local gas service pipes to properties and businesses are being replaced and engineers will need access to them to do the work, which will involve a brief interruption of the gas supply. Those affected will be given advance notice.

If anyone has any queries about the work they can contact customer services on 0800 096 5678.

The gas main replacement project in Arnold is part of an £800 million investment National Grid is making to renew gas mains in the East of England running up until 2021. During 2013/14 the company is upgrading some 350 km (220 miles) of pipe in the region.
