WALTHAM, MA - National Grid recently unveiled a solar awning at its Sustainability Hub at 912 Main Street, Worcester, MA, and recognized a successful partnership focused on sustainability, innovation, a commitment to renewables and energy education. The 3.8 kilowatt solar awning is the first Massachusetts awning system using semi-transparent photovoltaic modules, enabling visitors to see sunlight being captured and converted into electricity.

In partnership with Clark University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the City of Worcester, the Sustainability Hub has had more than 8,000 visitors since opening in 2013, showcasing sustainability, the modernization of the electric grid and energy saving choices that benefit customers. National Grid has plans to replicate the Sustainability Hub's success in Rhode Island and New York.

'We could not be more pleased with how the Sustainability Hub has been received in the Worcester community,' said Marcy L. Reed, president, Massachusetts, National Grid. 'The Hub brings to life the benefits of the Smart Energy Solutions program, while also encouraging customers to learn how they can take control of their energy costs in their homes or businesses. This awning is just another example of creativity and innovation on the grid.'

Clark University President David P. Angel praised National Grid's embrace of the Hub's educational component, noting that talented students are learning to do things in innovative ways.

'I can't thank National Grid enough for its willingness to think imaginatively about how we can create more together, President Angel said. 'Here in Worcester, optimism is not hard to find and it's well earned.' Worcester City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. said the city takes energy and sustainability seriously.

'This innovative project not only showcases green power, but the brain power supplied by Worcester's world-class universities like Clark University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. 'I'm looking forward to the Sustainability Hub continuing its mission of showcasing Worcester as a leader in energy efficiency and green technology.'

The 50-foot long awning consists of eight modules and is designed to cool the exterior of the Sustainability Hub, making it even more energy efficient. The solar panels generate nearly 4 kilowatts helping to offset about 15 percent of the Hub's electricity usage. The awning also serves as an example of an innovative solar energy product when roof space is limited.
