Tokyo, March 25, 2015 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today today announced the development of technologies that enable the automatic design of virtualized networks in a multivendor environment in approximately one four-hundredth of the time required by conventional technologies. These technologies help telecom carriers to implement and expand virtualized networks in a short period of time, resulting in flexible network operations where processing performance can be temporarily increased during large surges in transmission traffic.

The new technologies enable the automatic design of virtualized networks by simply specifying the elements that make up a network, such as routers and firewalls, then identifying their performance requirements.

Until now, it has not been possible to reliably implement virtualized network functions (VNF) using communications equipment from multiple vendors since the internal configuration of VNF changed based on the communications equipment being used. These differences made it was necessary to carry out a vast amount of verification work in order to ensure reliable performance when designing virtualized networks that consisted of VNF from multiple vendors.

NEC's new technologies help resolve these issues using a statistical analysis model for predicting performance based on external measurements, and a discrete event system model for assuming data traffic transitions. These two models are combined to create a network performance model and achieve an extremely precise understanding of VNF performance. As performance can be predicted for each VNF, overall performance of a virtualized network can be identified extremely precisely, even for networks configured with VNF from multiple vendors.

This innovation enables the time taken to design virtualized networks to be reduced to around one four-hundredth that of the conventional technology, meaning that telecommunications carriers will be able to provide services quickly and flexibly even when network demand fluctuates, including rapid increases in user access.

"This new technology makes it possible to carry out automatic virtualized network design. All you have to do is enter the plan for configuring the functions and performance requirements into the systems when networks are built or extended. The virtualized network design will then be carried out automatically, drastically reducing the time taken for performance tuning," said Akio Yamada, General Manager of Knowledge Discovery Research Laboratories, NEC Corporation.
