DRIVING GROWTH: The new coffee capsule factory will lead to the creation of around 450 new jobs.

Nestlé has opened a large coffee capsule factory in the northern German city of Schwerin, increasing Nescafé Dolce Gusto production capacity and providing new employment opportunities for the region.

The factory will lead to the creation of around 450 new jobs and comes after two years of construction and a cost of 220 million euros.

The new factory will supply Germany, the largest market for Nescafé Dolce Gusto, as well as the Scandinavian and Eastern European markets with the brand's capsules for hot and cold coffee- and tea-based drinks.

Nestlé's other existing Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsule factories are in Tutbury, United Kingdom and in the Spanish city of Girona.

Nescafé Dolce Gusto, launched in 2006 in Switzerland, Germany, and the United Kingdom, has been one of the company's fastest-growing businesses and is available in around 60 countries.

Adding jobs

The factory opening was attended by the German Minister for Family Affairs, Manuela Schwesig, and Erwin Sellering, Minister-president of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, along with Gerhard Berssenbrügge, CEO of Nestlé Germany.

The Schwerin factory furthers Nestlé's youth employment initiative to create 20,000 opportunities for young people in Europe by 2016 to address the European youth unemployment crisis. By the end of 2015, Nestlé Germany alone hopes to create over 1,000 jobs and 1,300 traineeships for young people.

"We firmly believe that growth in Europe is possible. That's why we invest continuously in the European market and in convincing innovations such as Nescafé Dolce Gusto, in modern technologies and highly qualified staff," said Nestlé CEO Europe Laurent Freixe at the official opening of the Schwerin facility.

The factory was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold status.
