The New York Times Launches Travel Program for High School Students

The New York Times Student Journeys

Combines Travel and Learning to Inspire a Younger Audience

NEW YORK, October 3, 2016 - The New York Times today announced that it will launch a new educational travel program for high school students, The New York Times Student Journeys. Each itinerary will explore carefully curated themes and topics associated with Times coverage, giving students the opportunity to enjoy a mix of cultural and educational activities in a structured and safe environment. Prospective students can begin completing the application starting today, with departures starting Summer 2017

The 2017 program includes 14 itineraries, visiting a total of 14 countries, including Cuba, Colombia, Vietnam and Australia and each designed around one of eight distinct interests - Activities & Sports, Arts & Culture, Business & Economics, Food & Agriculture, History & Context, Journalism & Media, Politics & Perspectives and Science & Nature. During each trip, student participants will be joined by either a Times journalist or leading subject-matter expert to provide additional context to the theme at hand, extending the subject beyond the classroom through an interactive, hands-on approach to learning. With guidance from group leaders and their Times expert, students will pursue a culminating project related to the trip theme.

'Modeled after our popular Times Journeys initiative, The New York Times Student Journeys will provide our younger readers, through an educational context, the opportunity to engage with the global issues that are shaping the world around them,' said David Rubin, Senior Vice President and Head of Brand, The New York Times Company. 'Millennial and younger readers are coming to The Times in greater numbers than ever before. Our millennial audience has increased by 61% over the past year. We are excited to offer them an outlet to explore their existing passions and even develop new ones.'

Each journey will be paired by either a Times journalist or leading subject-matter expert. Some of the 2017 journeys include:

  • Australia and Fiji: Responses to Climate Change with environmental reporter Pam Belluck
  • CERN and the Swiss Alps: Pushing the Boundaries of Science with cosmic affairs correspondent Dennis Overbye
  • China: Economics and Business in a Rising Market, with foreign business reporter David Barboza
  • Cuba: Baseball and National Identity, with sports reporter Tyler Kepner
  • Italy: Farm to Table in Tuscany, Campania and Sicily, with food correspondent Kim Severson
  • London: Art, Theater, Food and Fashion Through the Critic's Lens, with chief theater critic Ben Brantley
