Nexen has been named to the roster of the 2013 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. The Global 100 is known as the most transparent and quantitatively driven corporate sustainability assessment; inclusion is limited to a select group of the top 100 large-cap companies in the world. On this year's list, Nexen ranked 71, up from 89 the year before. Nexen was the highest ranking Canadian oil and gas company on the list.

"This is our fourth consecutive year in the Global 100, affirming Nexen's worldwide reputation for responsible energy development," says Kelly Kowalchuk, Vice President, HSE&SR. "The ranking demonstrates that we are willing and able to deal with important social and environmental issues in our everyday operations."

The Global 100 selection process begins with all companies that had a market capitalization of more than $US 2 billion as of Oct 1, 2012. To get on the short list, companies must pass four screens: disclosure practices, financial health, product category and financial sanctions. The short-listed companies are then assessed on 12 key performance indicators which include environmental, social and governance performance metrics. The Global 100 is comprised of the highest ranking companies in the short list, subject to the number of places allotted for each industry group.

The 2013 Global 100 list was released at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 23. The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World is an annual project initiated by Corporate Knights, an independent Toronto-based media, research and financial products company focused on clean capitalism.
