NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (President Taku Oshima; Headquarters: Nagoya, Japan) today announced that it has delivered an NAS Battery energy storage system to a hybrid storage battery system demonstration project* being conducted in the Oki Islands, Shimane Prefecture (the 'Oki Hybrid Project') by The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. ('Chugoku Electric').
*Ministry of the Environment Fiscal 2014 Electric Power Storage Demonstration Project to Promote Renewable Energy Introduction to Remote Islands'
NGK supplied a NAS Battery with a rated output of 4,200 kW and rated capacity of 25,200 kWh to the Chugoku Electric Power Nishinoshima Substation (Nishinoshima Town, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture) after receiving an order from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. On October 20, the completion ceremony for the hybrid storage battery system was held in Nishinoshima Town.
Chugoku Electric is further expanding its introduction of renewable energy in the Oki Islands. Since renewable energy is highly sensitive to the effect of weather conditions, a solution was needed to deal with fluctuations in renewable output. Solutions are particularly necessary in remote islands that are not connected by transmission cables to the mainland, since their power grids are of a much smaller scale than the mainland, amplifying the effect of renewable output fluctuations.
The Oki Hybrid Project introduced a hybrid storage battery system combining the NAS battery, with its excellent long-term output characteristics, and a lithium-ion battery, which has outstanding short-term output characteristics. The NAS battery will stabilize large, slow fluctuations, while the lithium-ion battery will absorb rapid, small fluctuations due to passing clouds or sudden changes in wind speed. The combination and coordinated control of two types of storage battery for a single objective is an advanced initiative being attempted for the first time in Japan.
The project connects the Nishinoshima Substation where the hybrid storage battery system is installed with diesel generators, renewable energy power generation facilities and other equipment at other locations via a network. The project will demonstrate technology for efficient charge and discharge management and control of storage batteries and is scheduled to run from September 2015 to September 2018. Through its operation of the hybrid storage battery system, Chugoku Electric expects to receive over 10,000 kW, the minimum demand of the Oki Islands, by combining around 8,000 kW of new installations over the entire archipelago with the existing 3,000 kW.
NAS battery systems are used in France and the U.S. for balancing the demand and supply of electric power on remote islands. NGK aims to serve the growing global demand for large-capacity storage batteries to support increased adoption of renewable energy.
