Decision Made to Establish a New Production Site in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (President Taku Oshima; Headquarters: Nagoya, Japan; 'NGK') today announced that it has decided to establish a new production site for ceramics for semiconductor manufacturing equipment in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. NGK plans to invest approximately ¥20.0 billion in the new plant and will start its mass production from April 2020. Production at the new plant is scheduled to be undertaken by NGK's manufacturing subsidiary, NGK CERAMIC DEVICE CO., LTD.

NGK currently produces ceramics for semiconductor manufacturing equipment at Chita Site (Handa City, Aichi Prefecture) and Komaki Site (Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture). To address surging demand, NGK has acquired approximately 132,500 m2 of land in Tajimi City to establish the new plant. Mass production is scheduled to begin in April 2020, and the new plant will expand NGK's production capacity by approximately 25%.

The new plant will produce ceramic functional components (susceptors) that support a silicon wafer, a semiconductor material inside semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Leveraging the features of fine ceramics, which offer superior physical properties including strength plus heat and corrosion resistance, NGK has succeeded in producing high-performance susceptors by its unique manufacturing method. NGK susceptors deliver stable performance even in severe semiconductor manufacturing processes such as high-temperature corrosive gas, plasma, thereby enabling customers to enhance their semiconductor manufacturing productivity.

The semiconductor market is expected to grow steadily, due not only to the mobile devices market but also to increases in data volume driven by the full-scale emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), a trend that seeks to connect all manner of physical things to the Internet, and artificial intelligence (AI). Semiconductor manufacturers are expected to continue making high levels of investment in 3D NAND flash memory for solid state drives (SSDs) used in data centers and other facilities, and in refinement in the logic IC field. Based on this outlook, NGK expects that demand for our susceptors will also continually increase.
