Nikon Corporation (President: Kazuo Ushida, Tokyo) has been named as a recipient of the Shokumon Award from the National University Corporation, the University of Tokyo (hereinafter referred to as 'the University of Tokyo') for its long period of activities in support of the establishment of endowed research centers.

The Shokumon Award recognizes and thanks individuals, corporations, and organizations that have made a significant contribution to the growth of the University of Tokyo, either through private donations, volunteer work and support, or the establishment of endowed research centers.

Nikon has established the Optical Engineering research centers in the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo since 2006 and developed many activities such as providing lectures and designing exercises, with the aim of bridging the gap between the optical technologies that hold an important position in Japanese industry and optical studies in universities. These activities have been evaluated and Nikon has received the Shokumon Award at this time.

  • The Nikon Chair of Optical Engineering (from November 2006 to March 2012) and The Nikon Chair of Imaging Science (since April 2014) were established to foster outstanding human resources who will lead the next-generation of optical industry of Japan, through providing optical education that is directly connected to the optical industry to universities, in order to bridge the gap that is becoming wider in recent years between cutting-edge optical technology in the industry and optical studies in academics. They foster human resources who will understand the industrial optical field and develop a high level of awareness of its importance, then direct them toward Japanese industry and universities.
  • Attaining successful results and delivering long-term support by installing a new terrain into the university's educational activities from the industry point of view, it is recognized that these efforts have brought distinguished achievement for the University of Tokyo.

We consider that this award was presented because our activities connecting universities and industry were highly evaluated.
We will continue to develop these activities and further contribute to fostering the human resources who will lead the next-generation of optical industry.
