Northeast Utilities Announces New President of
Yankee Gas and NSTAR Gas


HARTFORD, Conn. and BOSTON, Mass. (Dec. 8, 2014) - Northeast Utilities is pleased to announce William Akley as the new president of the company's gas business unit, which includes Yankee Gas in Connecticut and NSTAR Gas in Massachusetts. Akley comes to NU from National Grid where he most recently served as Senior Vice President of U.S. Gas Operations and was responsible for field operations including construction, maintenance and meter services throughout the company's service territory in New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

"Bill is a seasoned veteran of the utility industry with more than 30-years of experience in all facets of the natural gas sector," said Werner Schweiger, Executive Vice President and COO at Northeast Utilities, parent company of Yankee Gas and NSTAR Gas. "His solid track record for exceptional operational and safety performance along with his extensive knowledge and foresight will be invaluable for our customers as we continue to expand access to natural gas in Connecticut and Massachusetts."

In his new role, Akley is responsible for the overall operations of the company delivering natural gas to approximately 214,000 customers in 71 cities and towns in Connecticut, and 300,000 customers in 51 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Given his expertise and leadership position, Akley is expected to advance Yankee Gas and NSTAR Gas' commitment to delivering reliable energy and superior customer service.

Prior to National Grid, Akley spent several years at KeySpan Energy in New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He began his energy career at Brooklyn Union Gas in New York City.

Akley earned his MBA from Adelphi University and his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from Clarkson University. He is a licensed professional engineer and has served as the Safety Committee Chairperson for the American Gas Association and a board member of the Northeast Gas Association. Akley will report directly to Werner Schweiger.
